THE plight of 27 children under the age of 12  who have had to go to bed on an empty stomach was highlighted recently.
The problem faced by the children of the Teratak Nur Barakah in Section 24 here was highlighted through an SMS.

Popular TV show Bella, a  ntv7 production, decided to highlight the plight of the   children by shooting a special Hari Raya segment.

Bella producer Ayesyah Wahab, 27, said the children from the home are mostly from poor families and children of single parents.

"The SMS which was circulated among the public regarding the lack of food in this home caught our attention.

"We decided to have an early  Hari Raya celebration with the children and highlight the problems faced by the home," said Ayesyah.

The home began its operations since late 2009 with only a few children.

However, more families began sending their children here and it had become increasingly difficult financially to run the home. The monthly expenditure is about RM10,000.

"Some parents begged the guardians at Teratak Nur Barakah to provide shelter for their children because of poverty."

She added the children from the home can only stay there until they turn 12.

The Bella TV crew, and one of the programme host Daphne Iking, was with the  children during the breaking of fast. They were treated to Domino's Pizza and apparel from Parkson.

"The children wanted to eat Domino's Pizza instead of ketupat and lemang. We decided to fulfil their wish by seeking sponsorship from Domino's," said Ayesyah.

Children from the home said they were happy to live at Teratak Nur Barakah. They claim they were more comfortable living than in their homes.

They did not mind having simple or no food at the home.

Guardian Zuhari Mohd Salleh said the public can contribute either cash, clothes or household essentials.

The home is at 22 Jalan Lobak Putih 24/21, Seksyen 24, Shah Alam, Selangor.
