Today marks the start of Lent for Christians all around the world. Ash Wednesday derives it's name from the placing of ash (mixed with either olive oil or Holy Water) onto the foreheads of the faithful. This practice adheres the sign of mourning and repentance to God and it's interesting to note that the ashes are gathered from the burnt ashes of the palms used in the previous Palm Sunday.
